Mississippi Farmers Market back in action Saturday

Mississippi Farmers Market Back In Action Saturday

The Mississippi Farmers Market is back in action Saturday to kick off the 2015 season at its High Street location after a holiday break, the Mississippi agriculture and commerce department announced.

The market will be open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Market manager Frank Malta said 51 vendors have signed up; 24 are farmers. Several new specialty processors - vendors who take farm products and make cakes, cookies, pies, jams, jellies and pickles - are coming on board, he said, as well as the market's first major cattle farmer, Remington-Lott Farms. "He plans to be there every week, selling steaks and chops and roasts and ground beef," Malta said, "like you get at a meat market." The Mississippi grass-fed cattle are fed out with grain the last three months, for marbling and flavor.

Market cattle vendors up to now have sold shares of animals.

Cold-weather crops such as Mississippi-grown radishes, beets, carrots, sweet potatoes and a variety of greens are expected. High tunnels and greenhouses mean a wider variety of crops earlier in the season. Milk, cheeses, yogurt, honey, eggs and more are also expected, as well as the specialty foods and hand-crafted items.

The market will resume a three-day-a-week schedule in spring.
